Why does your recording environment matter?
Your recording environment has a bigger impact on audio quality than your gear. The two factors that matter most: room sound (reverb) and background noise.
First, the 'sound' of the room itself — echo and reverb. It can be a real problem for podcasters, and we'll dig into it next (including a trick to kill it in any room for less than $15).
Second, noise. You don't need complete silence — very few people have that luxury, and gentle ambient noise can actually add atmosphere in the right context.
The key: background noise should never be distracting or compete with your actual voice. Listeners should always be able to hear and focus on the content they turned up for.

Your room needs work
You'll get the biggest quality jump from treating reverb (next microstep) and quieting one or two noise sources — not from a more expensive mic.
