Microstep 6 of 11

What is a dynamic microphone?

A dynamic microphone is tougher, more forgiving, and great in untreated rooms. The Samson Q2U is dynamic — and that's why it's the default for new podcasters.

Dynamic mics are durable. They're the right pick for live recordings, on-location work, or carrying a mic around with you for ad-hoc captures.

Most dynamics only have a cardioid polar pattern, which means they're built for one person at a time. If you want to interview with dynamics, you either need two mics or you hold one and constantly point it back and forth.

Dynamics are powered by whatever they plug into, so the recording signal is weaker than a condenser's. You either turn the gain up or boost the level in post — both raise the hiss in your audio. Not a deal breaker, and for podcasting the pros usually outweigh the cons.

The Samson Q2U is dynamic — durable, flexible, and doesn't need a perfect environment to sound good. That's exactly why it's the right call for beginners on a budget.
