Microstep 1 of 10

Why are you doing a podcast?

Before anything else — before names, mics, or launch plans — figure out why you want to make a show. It's the thing that keeps you going when podcasting feels hard.

Most new podcasters land in one of two camps.

Camp one: freelancers, thought leaders, or people in marketing. Here, podcasting is a way to build trust and authority — and to give your customers or audience a stream of valuable, entertaining content.

Camp two: creative outlets — hobbyists and connoisseurs, people passionate about a given topic. Knitting. Craft beer. Horror films. Model railways. Anything, really.

Your "why" could be more sales, a bigger community, or just getting famous. They're all valid — what matters is knowing it, so you can push through the curveballs.

Whichever camp you're in, it's essential to name the "why" up front. You'll lean on it every time life gets in the way.
